KARACHI - Rangers allegedly shot dead an unarmed youth after he did not stop his car here at Shah Faisal Colony on Tuesday.
As per details, 24-year-old Ghulam Haider had contracted marriage three weeks ago. He was on his way to hospital with his friend who was a dialysis patient. Rangers officials, positioned near the accident site, spotted the car and signaled the driver to stop it. As the youth ignored the signal and did not stop, Rangers opened fire. Witnesses said Haider’s car collided with a motorcycle, and injured the rider slightly who later disappeared. However, Haider was killed on the spot. Victim’s body was taken to Jinnah Hospital for autopsy where medico-legal officer, Dr Manzur Memon, said the bullet had hit his head from the back and crossed out from the eye.
Meanwhile, the Rangers have said that the victim was a criminal and they killed him in an encounter.
Haider’s cousin, Asif, who was also travelling in car told police, “I am a dialysis patient and Haider was taking me to a private hospital in Korangi for dialysis when I suddenly heard gunshots and found Haider dead”.
Asif said, “We were in emergency and did not see when Rangers signaled us to stop the car”.
Rangers’ personnel later took victim’s body to Shah Faisal Police Station where a crowd of people already gathered there besieged the police station. They also shouted slogans against the Rangers and tried to attack the police station. Police and Rangers had to be confined in the police station. Police reinforcement was called in who, after arrival, baton charged the protesters and used tear gas shells to disperse the demonstrators.
According to victim’s family, Haider got married 25 days ago and lived in the same area. He was eldest among his six brothers. “We don’t want registration of just an FIR,” said victim’s father, Ghulam Mustafa, adding “We want their (Rangers’ personnel responsible) wives to become widows like Haider’s wife.”
SHO Tahir Ayub confirmed the victim’s killing by Rangers. “Deceased had no criminal record,” he said. Nowadays, Rangers’ reputation seems not good as it has also been accused of torturing to death a unit in charge of the MQM’s Burnes Road sector, Ajmal Baig, the SHO claimed. He further alleged that some Rangers officials were also involved in disappearance of nine MQM workers from the city and MQM had also filed petition in Sindh High Court for recovery of their workers.
